Letter to Ross Care
December 17, 1975

Dear Mr. Care:

In answer to your letter of November 22, 1975, I can only say that you tossed my mind quite a number of years into the past.

It is interesting that Alice in Wonderland has become, as you say, “A real cartoon buff’s picture.” I know that we all had varied opinions of our end result. We certainly did not please the Lewis Carroll or John Tenniel fans. Perhaps this also had something to do with our own attitude about the picture. However, I think the difficulty that those of us who animated Alice had, was that she was a perfectly normal little girl who found herself in a madhouse. She was surrounded by a group of totally unsympathetic characters. It is very difficult to bring to life and make you believe in a character who can only react as puzzled or annoyed. I surmise from your letter that perhaps we did succeed and didn’t recognize it.
