Interviewed by Ross Care
1976
Ross Care: Could you briefly sum up the major duties of a shorts director at the Disney Studio, touching upon what Walt Disney expected and allowed of these directors?
Jack Hannah: Follow through production of the short—from the inception of the story to the completed film in color. Walt would usually OK the final storyboard—the corrected “Rough Pencil” reel. Then at some time would probably see the finished product before release.
RC: Were there any major differences between being a shorts director and being a sequence director on one of the Disney features?
JH: Not much difference, except that a short was designed to be a piece of entertainment in itself—while a sequence in a feature would have the problem of tying into the overall production.
