Dear Ross,
I am a little late, but here are some answers and comments about background painting that you requested. Also enclosed is a listing of film credits from Art of Animation. Communication is the key word—to help lead the viewers' impressions in such a manner as to communicate most fully the contents of the story.
Backgrounds support the story and the animation. Style should express the character of the story. Color should support the mood of the story. Light values and shadows should accentuate and focus attention on the action.
