Alice Davis: We started collecting [art from Papua New Guinea] in 1962, I think. It’s very expensive because they didn’t have too many roads and you had to fly in bush planes everywhere. And you never had to worry about take-offs or landings because if you didn’t make it, you didn’t have to worry about not making another one. [Laughs]

AD: It started first with my childhood at Chouinard Art Institute. They had a gallery down in the entrance to the school and I lived nearby. My mother was an artist and an art teacher, and she was always talking about Chouinard being such a magnificent art school. […]
