As a character designer, Tom Oreb was unequaled. The only character which gave him difficulty wasn’t found on any drawing board, but was rather that of his own self. Tom Oreb was too modest to be recognized, too anonymous to be understood, too troubled to continue being a genius. Oreb was a designing dynamo. He was a one-man UPA, designing one exquisite character after another. While his designs could be far-out, experimental, decorative, and everything else that comprised ’50s design, they were also chockful of the more elusive, difficult-to-define elements of energy, invention, style, warmth, humor, and beauty.
