I have been asked by our illustrious founder [comic book historian Denis Gifford] to divulge a few facts from a blameless and quite unexceptional life. I know not why he requires such data, unless it be as a dire warning to others who may be considering a comic-al career. Therefore, unaccustomed as I am and never thinking that I would end up as an ACE reporter, here goes. December 1916. In what was then a quiet, salubrious district of North London, the picturesque castellated pile known as Holloway Gaol stood bleak and impregnable in the pale wintry sunshine. Within its massive walls the inmates quietly proceeded with the serious business of serving their sentences, long and short term, some in solitary confinement and some, no doubt,
incarcerated for life.... […]
