Retta Scott will always hold a special position in Disney’s history as the Studio’s first female animator.
Karl Cohen once wrote the following text about her career:
Retta Scott was born in Omak, Washington on February 23, 1916. She studied art in Seattle and at Chouinard in Los Angeles before joining Disney on March 23, 1939, in the Story Department. On August 6, 1940, she was moved to the Animation Department to work on Bambi. Retta was very talented but quite green about animation, so Bambi’s director David Hand, Lee Blair, and others pitched in to teach her how to make her art move. She quickly became Disney’s first female animator, working on the dogs that chased Bambi’s mother, and her name appears in the movie’s opening credits. […]
