Cyrano de Bergerac was included in "Man and the Moon" on ABCs Disneyland this week because the hero of Edmond Rostands 1897 drama had some interesting observations on space travel (see opposite page). Disneys Cyrano appears for barely more than a minute during the hour-long show, but five artists pondered for a month and submitted 34 versions of the long-nosed character. Average number of nominees for a Disney cartoon role is 12, but Cyrano, according to director Ward Kimball, was "a provocative character who called for special handling." Winner, above, says animator Julius Svendsen, was selected because "it could be easily handled in animation."
