1955 is likely to go down in American history as the year when a TV series named "Davy Crockett" succeeded in substantially altering the course of a great American legend. As you probably know, the series (and now the movie version of the series) has also substantially altered the lives of an untold number of small boys and girls. These have traded in their Buck Rogers guns and their Superman outfits for rawhides and old Betsys, they have helped the coonskin-cap business to burgeon until it seems likely to bust its seams and—as you can see in the list on page 30—they have also cajoled a willing fraternity of book publishers to put out an unprecedented number of books on the easygoing and apparently likable ex-Indian fighter, ex-bear killer, ex-Congressman now known as The King of the Wild Frontier.
