Carl Barks In The Limelight

While 1994 is Donald Duck’s birthday, all signs point toward the one doing the celebrating being Carl Barks.

Barks has been associated with Donald Duck since just after the creation of that famous squawker. Donald first appeared in the 1934 Silly Symphony cartoon "The Wise Little Hen." It was late in 1935 that Barks joined the Disney Studio, initially as an inbetweener (doing fill-in drawings smoothing out what the master animators and their assistants did). His steady stream of story suggestions for short cartoons convinced Walt Disney that Barks should be transferred to the story department. There, teamed with various storymen (Jack Hannah being the most significant) Barks specialized in creating storylines for Donald Duck seven minute cartoons.
