Millions of people have been thrilled by the rides and amusements designed by Disney “imagineers.”At their “idea factory” in Glendale, Calif, creativity is the watchword and the key to success. And to complete numerous projects around the world, the company plans to triple its staff over the next three years.
Imagine how much fun it would be to work on making dreams come true. Imagine the thrill of decorating your office any way you wanted. Imagine how comfortable it would feel if all employees, from the vice presidents to the janitors, wore Mickey Mouse name tags. And what a pleasure it would be if everyone, no matter how high in the corporate ladder, could wear street clothes every working day. Too good to be true? Not at Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), where hundreds of Imagineers enjoy the pleasures of working for the Disney unit. WDI, with headquarters in Glendale, Calif., is the "idea factory," the "dreamer's workshop" for the Walt Disney Company. It's a place where people work out of curiosity and where creativity is the key to success. A 150,000 square-foot, two-story building houses hundreds of Imagineers, ranging from engineers, architects, and designers to sculptors, illustrators, and producers. The building, covered with Disney paraphernalia inside (with none outside for security reasons), reflects the Disney corporate culture: Creativity.
