The factory that made about 1,500 steel-framed boxes for hotel rooms at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Fla., is in full operation again turning out a minimum of eight modules a day.
The owner and operator of the plant, the American Bridge Division of United States Steel Corp., Pittsburgh, has started delivery of 821 steel-frame boxes for the Court of Flags, a $20-million motel park in Orlando. Located in a 3,000-acre commercial area called Major Center, the motel park will consist of two 203-room motels and a 415- room motor inn.
According to William J. Walsh, president of Walden Hotel Corp., Chicago, co-owner of the motel park, "Conventional construction would have taken a minimum of 14 months, but we expect to complete the first motel in March, a second in May and the third in July."
The steel-framed boxes are 12 ft 8 in. X 28 ft, plus extensions for balconies and corridors. Framing elements are tubular sections. The floors are 1.5-in.-thick galvanized roof deck welded in place and covered with lightweight concrete. Interior walls are gypsum board and exterior walls will be field-applied stucco.
Also under construction at Major Center is a 17-story, $22-million, 724-room twin-tower hotel that is using conventional construction.
