Anaheim, Cal., June 28--
An elevated, automated transportation system designed to carry large numbers passengers in continuous motion was introduced today in Disneyland by Goodyear Tire and Rubber company.
Called the Goodyear PeopleMover, the 62 four-car units can carry 4,885 passengers an hour over the threequarter mile course which goes thru Disneyland’s new Tomorrowland section, a showcase for United States industry.
The PeopleMover vehicle units are propelled by electric motor-powered rubber wheels protruding from the roadbed of an elevated glideway. A synchronized, revolving transfer platform permits passengers to get on or off while the cars continue to move.
Proposed in Loop
A similar system is being developed for the planned 600-million-dollar Disney World in central Florida near Orlando. A variation of the system has been proposed for possible application in Chicago's Loop.
Russell DeYoung, chairman and chief executive officer of Goodyear, told newsman at a meeting that the PeopleMover has “great possibilities" as a superior method of moving people over short to medium range distances.
“At airports, it could carry passengers to and from parking areas and connect remote terminals,” he said.
Developed by Disney
“In big shopping centers, it could help busy housewives cover more ground faster. At industrial complexes, it could move personnel speedily from plant to plant and from distant parking lots to plants.
“And in the cities of tomorrow, which at least on their surface may be devoid of automobiles in congested areas, it could be the means of moving pedestrians to and from their destinations.”
Developed by W. E. D. [Walter E. .Disney] Enterprises, Inc., the transportation system can be engineered to operate on, above, or below the ground.
